Frequently Asked QuestionsHow do I enroll in the program? Individuals or their parents/guardians must complete a TROtt Enquiry Form Click here for the enquiry form in 'Word' format. They will then be contacted by the Program Coordinator. If the application is accepted, a Physician'e Referral will be requested. Provided that there are no contraindications to horse riding, the next step is an assessment and then the rider may be accepted for a trial period or directly into a class. What does it cost? There is a fee for the assessment - $50 or $100 dependant upon whether the Program Coordinator determines that a physiotherapist assessment is needed. There is an annual membership fee of $25 to cover admin and insurance. After the Assessment, the rider may be accepted on a 4 week trial riding once per week at a cost of $40 per class. The fee for the riding classes is $40 per class and classes are once per week and will be either 45min or 1 hour depending on whther the class is private, semi-private or group. The session must be paid in advance - please see the calendar for the timing and duration of each session Can I come out to ride for the day? No. All riders must be enrolled in the therapeutic program. Can individuals without special needs participate in lessons at TROtt? No. At the present time we are unable to offer these lessons. Can adults ride? Yes. What qualifications do the TROtt staff have? TROtt has Instructors and Coaches who are certified with the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA) and with Equine Canada. Instructors and Coaches attend clinics, workshops and seminars frequently to remain current in their field of expertise. All staff members have current First Aid and CPR. TROtt also works with consultant physiotherapists. Will I need special clothing to ride? Safety of Riders, Volunteers and Horses is a priority. Riders must wear ASTM approved helmets. We recommand that the rider has their own helmet but we do have a wide range of sizes available to borrow. We advise proper riding footwear or boots with up to a 1" heel. What is CanTRA? The Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA) is the governing body of therapeutic riding in Canada. CanTRA member centres are inspected regularly to ensure a high level of safety standards. CanTRA member centres purchase liability insurance through CanTRA to provide adequate coverage and national standards of safety. TROtt must pay a fee per rider to cover the cost of the insurance. Why must each rider pay a TROtt membership fee each year? The membership fee covers the CanTRA insurance and the CanTRA membership fee for our centre. What if I cannot afford $40 a lesson? TROtt is a nonprofit organization and participates in its own fundraising. The program is therefore not able to provide funding for riders. Please contact a social worker, service club or the Easter Seals organization or other local charitable organisations for possible assistance. Are there any weight restrictions? There may be restrictions depending on the horses available. Who is eligible for lessons? Therapeutic riding lessons are available to those over three years of age who have physical and/or developmental challenges. Riders must provide a Physician's referral. The following conditions are an example of some that will be considered: · Amputees · Arthritis · Cerebral palsy · Multiple sclerosis · Muscular dystrophy · Poliomyelitis · Spina bifida · Spinal cord injury · Traumatic brain injury · Visual impairment · Developmental coordination disorder · Developmental delay · Down syndrome · Hearing and speech difficulties · Attention deficit disorder · Learning and language disabilities · Sensory integration dysfunction When are the lessons offered? We are able to run a year round program with a reduced program in the winter months. The lessons are given at various times and days throughout the week. How is the program run? Lessons are designed specifically for the riders in that group. There is an opportunity to learn how to care for and groom horses, as well as learn basic riding skills. For persons with physical disabilities, the emphasis is on exercises and movement that will increase balance, coordination and muscle control while decreasing spasticity. Riders with developmental delays are involved in skill development that will help their memory, sequencing, attention span and concentration. A fun atmosphere with games and races helps to encourage participation, socialization and communication. We also offer the opportunity for those interested to enter video competitions run by Equine Canada. How can I volunteer? An energetic team of more than 100 Volunteers assists with lessons. Training clinics are provided, and no experience is necessary. Click here for more information. How is the program funded? The program does not receive on-going government support, so funds are raised through lesson fees, support from the community and various fundraising events. How can I donate to TROTT?
